Teesdale District Council rescinds the notional right of way

the soldiers are gone but the tank tracks remain

2003 - August 4
The chief executive of Teesdale District Council issued a notice:
 
The Rescinding of Notional Right of Way, Stainton Grove Industrial Estate
 
The notice declared 'that any notional right of way across the land, marked on the attached maps, is now rescinded.  This will take effect from 9 am 4th August 2003. From the above time and date people entering this area will be viewed as trespassers …
 
A note next to the map reads: 'The land within the denoted line is now a restricted area … Durham Constabulary have been given the power (to) remove any person(s) found to be trespassing.' (210, 212, 213, 214)

2003 - August 9
Five days later Durham County Council published a temporary footpath closure order for a maximum duration of 6 months commencing Saturday, 9 August 2003. (74) Teesdale Mercury 13 August 2003
2003 - August 20
'At a meeting of the social and environmental overview and scrutiny committee' … disrict councillors were told 'they had not adhered to two out of the four (corporate) objectives…
 
"How are we supposed to be encouraging the social and environmental needs of residents when the industry doesn't want it (the development) there and neither do the residents?" 
 
The chairman … agreed the objectives had not been fulfilled.' (31, 215) Teesdale Mercury 27 August 2003
