In the middle distance, on the other side of the railway embankment, was a figure-of-eight course for driver training.
Beyond and to the south east, near the A67, were the camps at Westwick (1.5 km) and Humbleton (3 km). During the wartime years
the local camps held around 20,000 members of the Royal Armoured Corps. Stainton Camp was also the site of a GHQ Battle School.
