I was stationed at Barnard
Castle with the 1st Battalion East
Surrey Regiment after we came back from Mogadishu,
circa 1950. I was the NCO in charge of rations. I had a girl friend in
Middleton in Teesdale and used to bicycle there to see her. I used to go to Middlesbrough
each week to pick up supplies. One of my drivers was "Sailor" Kane,
ex Navy. We hit black ice one time and skidded off the road, I jumped out
before we tipped over and had to lift the truck up with one hand and pull
"Sailor" out with the other. I went to local houses to phone for help
and get blankets to keep "Sailor" warm. When I got back to the truck,
I couldn't move it, even a fraction.
