I
was based at Stainton Camp from 1970 to 1971 with 5 Ordnance Field Park RAOC (later become 6 OFP and moved to Menden in Germany in Feb 1971).
In
1970, “Get Carter” was being filmed in the area. The Director wanted extras with short hair to play the
policemen and there were not many young men around with short hair at the time. A member of the production crew had
completed his national service in Stainton and so they approached the unit. We duly supplied 6(?) men, all from the
MT section, who enjoyed the next 2 weeks rushing around the country side in large Rover ‘police’ cars and fishing
the naked woman out of the lake. All their pay went to unit funds to pay for a post film party.
The
unit was very happy in Barnard Castle
and adopted the Bluebell as its pub. On moving to Germany, then new unit club was named the Bluebell and the then Landlord was invited out to open it.
Very
happy memories of Barnard Castle,
but my goodness, it was a very cold camp in the winter.
